Many of us are victims of the “Not Enough Time” clause where we choose fast easy foods like chips and fries as opposed to the healthier options of prepared meals. Keeping fit is a life long process and should incorporate a healthy lifestyle along with regular exercise and dieting. Some of the more drastic measures being done by people are purging (vomiting), starvation (skipping meals), laxative abuse, stimulant abuse and diuretics abuse. The later three being so dangerous, that they can cause irreparable damage to the human body and even death.

Breakfast, the most important meal of the day

Studies show that people who eat breakfast have better abilities to loose weight than those who skip it and take in more calories during lunch or snacks. An ideal breakfast would be leftovers spread over a thin crust pizza topped with lots of fresh vegetables. Stick to one slice for a pizza contains the carbohydrates you need and the fiber you need from the vegetables. Breakfast gets you through un-necessary snacking in while waiting for lunch and the dough once it goes through the digested track tends to expand giving you the feeling of being full lessening the need to sneak in that candy bar.

Artificial Sweeteners – Not so good for weight watchers

The problem stems from their ability to circumvent the natural sugar detection methods of the human body which is sort of confused with the substance that is sweet tasting yet does not have the chemical signature of naturally occurring sugars. The effect, the person ends up eating more thus taking in more calories that it should which could lead to obesity and other complications. Try to stick to natural foods that have natural sugars. You can use sugar but try to cut back and refrain from using artificial ones till more research is done.

The not-so diet helping diet soda

This is a surprising result that shows the substitution of sugar with artificial sweeteners has little or no effect and that it can even lead to obesity. The problem arises when the body absorbs the artificial sweetener which it cannot fully interpret (it tastes sweet yet it does not have the components of naturally occurring sugars) so the body becomes confused leading to one eating more than the recommended dietary allowance.

Going under the Knife - On the Rise!

wls.jpgPeople are opting more and more to go under the knife to get effective weight loss but the sad thing about the matter is that there is also a huge increase of children who are obese who’s parents are finding the procedure more acceptable. While the prospects of effective weight loss and control as being highly successful these cases are making it clear that the disease (obesity is now considered to be a disease) is getting people to take drastic measures to assure they do get in shape even with the risk of major operations such as colon shortening. There are studies that show that the medical procedure is truly a good solution for the problem, there might be more to the issue than just weight loss. Any major operation carries risks and a major one like colon shortening does get a fair share of side-effects which will become apparent only when complications do arise. More studies are needed to establish the procedure as a true solution nut for the obese, it may be the last straw if other methods prove to be insufficient.

Anorexia in Teens

There is foundation for the problem for being a teen with unrestricted access to the internet; one can get a lot of information that is well founded on sound medical research. The only problem is that teens should realize that there is a need for close medical supervision when going into diets that are all over the internet and even promoted by their favorite celebrities. One teen had a case of heavy acne and was forced to go on the net to find out what the best foods aggravate and can have the ability to lessen the occurrence of those unsightly red bumps. She was all normal, a perfect student and all energetic yet she had to deal with those pimples. She took on foods and modified her diet to the extent she has become so unhealthy that her parents began to notice and took her in for a consultation. She might have meant well but the fact of the matter is that whatever foods she might steer away or prefer those pimples would still appear for it has to do more with hormones rather than her diet. There is truth in the fact that certain foods do influence the formation or lacking of those bumps yet any modifications to your diet, especially to a growing teen must be supervised and controlled by a health professional. The teen has since recovered and yes she still has those red-bumps but she is her old healthy self thanks to her quick thinking parents who prevented her from falling into the lure of anorexia which could have resulted in serious health problems.

Our genes are the masters of our body and they have the ability to regulate and tell the body how to function properly. Along with our genes, environmental factors and upbringing, we develop our own unique set of nutritional needs and wants. It is true that scientists have long determined that we all need a specific amount of minerals and nutrients to survive yet that complete diet and nutritional intake may not always be possible with today’s fast paced lifestyle. Living on the edge does have it’s downside for it often prevents us from getting the right balance between eating, exercise and rest , all of which is essential for a healthy body. So stop once in a while and evaluate yourself or better yet do this when you go for a check-up (which should be at least once a year) so you get the big picture on what needs to be corrected in your life so you maintain good health for many years to come.
