As predicted, the economic recession has taken it’s toll on the cost of food and they have risen considerably since last year. But the good news shows that people are still sticking to healthier eating habits even with the higher costs of food. Health as it seems, takes a front-seat opposed to simply eating, raised awareness of food safety, where and how the food we eat are more important than the cost. People have been flocking to more organically grown products that have been reared without the use of hormones, pesticides and other man-made chemicals that have been found to accumulate in the body causing health problems many years after they were consumed. With the millions of artificial compounds we have created, first hailed a wonder chemicals turned villains with new and better understanding of their function.
Pesticides that allowed farmers to grow better and more profitable crops are now useless due to resistant bugs that prey upon food-crops. This necessitates more potent chemicals and the cycle continues till toxicity levels in the air, soil and food grown within them are so high they are unfit for human consumption. Growth hormones used in farm animals that grow in contained environments, once exposed to wild animals have no developed resistance to wild-animal borne pathogens such as the rash of H5N1 and H1N1 cases that re constantly growing in numbers as we speak. People are now asking where, how and with what their food have been grown, sure sign they are willing to pay for chemical free food that may be of less quality but have less toxins that can harm us in the long run.
